About this recording

We all have memories of our schooldays, and in particular our first day at school, but unlike

David Dunnett not many of us arrived late and unaccompanied. Listen to David talk about making friendships and the lifelong lesson he learned on his first day.

Catherine Munros frequent visits to the infant classroom at Lieurary School led to her early enrolment into school. She also describes the arrangements made to attend Miller Academy, Thurso when no school transport was provided.

Experiences at Dunbeath School and the annual school picnic are fondly remembered by Bill Sutherland and Marjory Scott recalls gas mask practice and the warnings about keeping away from suspicious objects.

Through childs eyes, Ishbel McBoyle recalls the sights and sounds of her first classroom in the Drill Hall in Halkirk. She conjures up memories of cumbersome desks, slates, the register, skipping games and doing reading, while Mary Glass recalls the occasions when Miss Campbell took her infant class to the Braehead in Pulteneytown to play Peas, Beans and Barley Oats.

Experiences at Thrumster School are described by Isobel Sutherland when she talks about inkwells and scratchy nibs, castor oil, outside toilets and the day the wrong boy got the strap and Ian Leith remembers warm milk at playtimes and Shackleton planes flying over Ackergill School.

Nancy Nicolson found she had to talk school language at Pulteneytown Academy and recalls the horror she felt when she used the word hoose in a sentence. Robert Sutherland remembers the opening of the brand new Pulteneytown Academy and Alan Miller talks about his attempt to speak a foreign language.

Pat Ramsay has fond memories of Staxigoe School, particularly the cold tattie piece, the reward for good spelling and cod liver oil.

James Miller reminisces about the Christmas Treats at Keiss School with Jamesie Mowat as compare for the evening.

Sports Days at Wick North School are recalled by Janis Scollay while Harry Gray remembers an eventful prize giving at Wick High School when he encountered one of his primary school teachers.
