You met your pals outside Woolies
Recorded 1 year agoJenny Szyfelbain recalls some of the shops in Wick from when she was growing up, from David Lewis’s grocer shop and the first Co-op on the Wick side to the great emporiums of Woolworths and Fred Shearer’s in the town centre.
“You met your pals outside Woolies,” Jenny says. Fred Shearer’s department store, meanwhile, was “the Jenners of Wick”.
Her recollections extend to butcher shops, shoe shops, chemists, banks, Cardosi’s cafe and the Ensign Shop run by Donnie and Jean Mackay.
Jenny also talks about her first job, working at the bingo at the Pavilion picture house. “And when folk who worked at the pictures went on holidays, we got to fill in for them then. So once you got every chiel sitting down, you could watch the film. It was the time of our lives!”
