Vida Sinclair was just six when she joined Wick Girls’ Pipe Band, under the leadership of Pipe Major Jim Christie, and she and her young bandmates had many memorable experiences along the way – ranging from winning a national championship to pushing a stranded bus out of a snowy field. She went on to become a long-serving member of Wick RBLS Pipe Band, taking over as Pipe Major for three seasons (2005 to 2007) following the death of Bobby Coghill. That was a period in which Wick hosted a huge massed pipe band event and Vida was grateful for the help she was given in ensuring it was a success.
Vida also talks about the strong links between the Wick band and the Bad Waldsee band from Germany – “a marvellous friendship” – and describes the excitement of performing on the Edinburgh Castle esplanade.
She mentions her husband George’s involvement in the band and the committee, and expresses her gratitude for the loyal support the band receives from the public.
Many people will remember Vida from the Wick branch of Woolworths, where she worked for well over 40 years.
With Wick RBLS Pipe Band celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019, Vida is considering stepping down later this year… “maybe”! For the time being, she continues to enjoy practising and performing, helping younger members and sharing in the companionship that the band has always provided.
