Jean R Bremner talks about growing up in Pulteneytown during the war years and vividly recalls the day that a mine exploded in Wick Bay, “Every window had been blown out and shattered”.
As a direct result of the explosion a fire broke out in the Co-operative bake-house in MacArthur Place.
Jean describes how she felt the day that war was declared. As a member of a Salvation Army group, The Singing Company, she recalls regular visits to the prisoner of war camp at Watten. She also talks about exploits in the snow and sledging down the hills near Wick harbour.
Jean also explains that through listening to Caithness Talking Newspaper, she recently discovered details of her family history. She found out that her Uncle, Angus Bremner, was awarded the Military Medal, but sadly he died in October 1917, at the age of 22 years. Jean explains, “These things were never discussed”.
