Wilma MacGregor’s love of the island of Stroma is apparent when she says,
“I’m very, very proud of my strong connection to Stroma”
Wilma lives at Huna and she is the daughter of Johnny and Margaret Green, who left the island of Stroma in 1958. In this interview, Wilma retells many of her mother’s stories of island life.
The death of Wilma’s grandmother and her unborn child, had an impact upon the close-knit island community, as well as the family.
Wilma recalls her mother talking about dresses made by Aunt Mary on her regular visits from America, the rescue of the crew from the Empire Parsons that ran aground on the east side of Stroma in 1942 and the experience of a trip on a bus from Huna to Wick.
Once Margaret had moved to the Mainland, she enjoyed looking out on her native island and she claimed that she would go back to the island if she could take her washing machine with her.
Mention is also made of the Stroma Gatherings that took place annually between the 70s and 2006, when those with Stroma connections met to share reminiscences of island life.
