In 2021 the Wick Society recognises a significant milestone in its history as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Wick Society volunteers and friends have chosen fifty objects, photographs, recordings and events that depict our rich heritage.
One particular favourite is the kist that sits in the box bedroom of the Wick Heritage Museum. It belonged to one of the many herring girls.
The Wick herring season ran from June to September, but many of the girls worked a double season. In early October they left for Yarmouth or Lowestoft to work there. Although the women and girls travelled by train, their belongings left a day or so earlier packed in a kist, a wooden box about 4 x 2 x 2 feet in size and it went by lorry or sometimes by train and awaited the girls at their destination.
Although there was excitement when the women and girls came home again, there was also great anticipation for the return of the kist with its exciting presents from Yarmouth.
