The Characters of Grant Street

Recorded 9 years ago

About this recording

Sutherland Clyne describes how young boys created a war memorial to help raise money for the actual war memorial built in Wick after World War I. He also recalls some of the characters living in Grant Street (Ducksie) in the early 20th century. Sutherland Clyne was born in Lybster on November 27th 1906 and lived most of his life in Wick, where his parents were involved in the fishing industry. In 1996, by then living in Christchurch, New Zealand, he contributed a series of six articles to the John O'Groat Journal based on his childhood reminiscences. In these recordings, Harry Gray (born 1937) reads the stories published in 1996.
