About this recording

Sutherland Clyne reflects on his childhood growing up in Pulteneytown from 1914-1924. He talks about some of the characters such as Ould Skinner, Happy Harry and the Puddin' Wife. He mentions Nuig, Cathie Bremner's shop, E Campbell's bakery and selling the Groat. Sutherland Clyne was born in Lybster on November 27th 1906 and lived most of his life in Wick, where his parents were involved in the fishing industry. In 1996, by then living in Christchurch, New Zealand, he contributed a series of six articles to the John O'Groat Journal based on his childhood reminiscences. In these recordings Harry Gray (born 1937) reads the stories published in 1996.
