Retired teacher Eric Farquhar looks back on his childhood in ’e Chapel – the Whitechapel area of Wick, beside the Bleaching Green. He explains how the neighbourhood got its name (it had more to do with the Jack the Ripper murders in London than with the presence of any actual chapel) and describes how at one stage the family had to share their toilet facilities with hordes of servicemen. He also tells the story of how a Luftwaffe plane, on its way to attack Wick aerodrome, flew so low over Whitechapel that its pilot was able to lean out of the cockpit and wave to Eric’s sister Jenny.
Eric also reveals how during the war he and his father were inadvertently responsible for a false alarm at Dunbeath over a suspected enemy parachutist… all because of a home-made kite!
