Listen to Pat Ramsay née Anderson vividly describe growing up in Papigoe and Staxigoe. Pat reflects upon happy days spent swimming in Staxigoe Harbour and the excitement of exploring rock pools and collecting shells and wildflowers and how the collecting of whelks often resulted in the making of a whelk sandwich.
Pat and her friends were members of an ‘elite’ club called the Bazooka Joe Club and members gathered in response to the blowing of a kazoo.
She goes on to talk about her early education at Staxigoe School and the rewards given for good spelling, the daily spoonful of cod liver oil, school dinners and play-pieces. She also describes the memorable day when Head Teacher Ben Manson dissected a squid to show the children of Papigoe and Staxigoe examples of the nature and wildlife around their shores.
