Mince soup
Recorded 7 years ago“Ye call yersel a Weeker an’ ye’ve never heard o’ mince soup?!”
In this short recording Robert Sutherland talks about his liking for mince soup – “a cheap way to feed people”. In particular he mentions a conversation with local journalist Noel Donaldson, who called in to see a mobile promotional display Robert was supervising during his time in the police force.
He explains how dialect words spread from place to place with the herring fishing.
Robert grew up in Murchison Street, Wick, and this is one of several recordings he has done for Wick Voices. He spent 31 years with the police and has lived in Thurso for over 25 years.
Robert is the author of Cop o’ the North: Robbie the Bobbie, a collection of some of his experiences of serving in the police force in the Highlands and Islands. The book is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cop-North-Mr-Robert-Sutherland/dp/1508971781
