Dr John Alexander: Medical Officer of Health for Caithness

Recorded 5 years ago

About this recording

A box of medical specimen slides belonging to Dr John Alexander (1839-1901) is one of many important and well-preserved artefacts in Wick Heritage Museum. Born in 1839 at Cromiequoy Farm, Watten, Dr Alexander became the highly respected Medical Officer of Health for Caithness and his statue stands in a prominent location above Wick's riverside. In this short recording, Alan Hendry looks at Dr Alexander's important contribution to public health in Caithness, and beyond, long before there was a National Health Service to care for people's needs.

The recording was originally made for Highland Objects, a series of podcasts taking listeners on a cultural tour of the Highlands and Islands. Highland Objects can be found at https://highlandobjects.wordpress.com
