Retired police sergeant Bert Macleod recalls a few of his experiences while on royal security duty during the Queen Mother’s regular visits to the Castle of Mey.
“She never went past without saying hello or good morning,” says Bert, who remembers having a long chat with Her Majesty one day on the subject of corgis.
He also talks about how the Queen Mother took a shine to one officer, George Douglas.
Bert was born in Thurso and grew up at Achness, at the foot of Loch Naver. He spent 30 years in the police force, serving in Thurso and Wick as well as having spells in Shetland.
