The NHS started on 5 July 1948 and one year later Ray joined the staff of the Bignold Cottage Hospital as its first secretary. She describes her first impressions of being introduced to her office at the hospital and she goes on to explain how she used her organisational skills to bring order to the inpatient and outpatient records. In addition, she discusses the range of tasks undertaken, such as taking notes during patient consultations, organising outpatient clinic lists as well as theatre lists. As well as answering the telephone, her job necessitated the ordering of blood and the checking of oxygen cylinders required for operations undertaken by Mr Roxburgh the resident surgeon at that time.
