Having recently taken early retirement from Scottish Water, Sandy Reid reflects upon his working life which started at the age of 17 when he began work in the architects' department of Caithness District Council.
During this interview, Sandy describes the skills and qualifications he acquired and the various operational roles he held within the water and sewerage department of Highland Region, the North of Scotland Water Authority, and Scottish Water.
A keen family historian, Sandy explains, "I didn't know at the time that my family had laid so many of the sewers and water mains that I would later be responsible for.”
He also includes interesting historical information about the development of the water supply and treatment works throughout Caithness and North Sutherland. He describes the different materials used in the manufacture of pipes over the years, such as cast iron and asbestos cement, and how these are currently being upgraded.
It is apparent that throughout his career Sandy appreciated being part of 'a great team effort'.
