The Macadams of Watten Mills

Recorded 3 years ago

About this recording

David Macadam is the grandson of the last of the millers at Watten.

In this recording, David talks about the history of the Achingale and Watten mills. He explains how John Miller was the first miller who worked at Watten Mill. He was employed there until the 1780s when the estate was bought by Sir Robert Anstruther who lived at Balcaskie in Fife. Eager to make improvements, Robert Anstruther brought one of his experienced millers, Peter Macadam to run the mill at Watten. For six generations, the Macadam family continued to run the mill.

David also recalls his annual visits to his grandmother at Angle Park, Wick.
