Lisa Poulsen has a passion for the landscape of Caithness and its stone.
"I create what I like to think are calming landscapes using Caithness flagstone, capturing the vast skylines and huge skies that we enjoy here in Caithness,” explains Lisa as she describes the process of creating her StoneScape collection.
Throughout this interview, Lisa talks of the various people and places that have influenced her art.
She recalls fond memories of growing up in Thurso and describes the fun and adventure she had with her friends as they explored the outdoors, whether bobbing in the sea or jumping into Thurso harbour.
While attending Thurso High School she was influenced by art teacher, Fergus Mather and says, "He really opened my eyes to art and especially to the digital art world.”
On graduating from Napier University Lisa travelled for a year before returning to Caithness in 2017.
Shortly after the birth of her first child, she started a graphic design business called 'Inspired by Caithness'. This led to many design projects, including the North Coast 500 logo. As time passed she shifted her creative focus to develop her interest in the landscape of Caithness and its stone.
She also talks of the support, encouragement and advice she received from jewellery designer Sheila Fleet.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Lisa had a desire to give something back to the community This led to a percentage of Inspired by Caithness sales being donated to local charities including Caithness Foodbank and Caithness and Sutherland Women's Aid. She also instigated the launch of the online Caithness Market.
Lisa also talks of her appointment as one of the Caithness Artists in Residence at Lyth Arts Centre working on a post Covid recovery project in Thurso, encouraging closer connections with people and their surroundings.
